How Long Does a Gas & Welding Equipment Inspection Take?

Most of the visit is not the testing
A gas and welding equipment inspection is quicker than most workshops expect. The testing itself — regulators, hoses, flashback arrestors, machines — moves fast when the gear is accessible and the paperwork is in one place. What stretches a visit is hunting for equipment that has wandered off to a job, or working out how old something is because the tag has gone.
So the honest answer to how long does an on-site equipment inspection take is: plan on half a day for a typical workshop, and understand that the number moves with how many gas trains you run, not how many welders you employ.
What actually drives the time
The count that matters is assemblies, not people. One workshop with four welders sharing two oxy-fuel carts is a shorter visit than a two-person shop with six trolleys scattered across a yard.
Each oxy-fuel set carries several items that get checked in sequence:
- regulators — leak tested at working pressure, plus functional checks
- hoses — inspected along their length for cuts, abrasion, perishing and crushed sections
- flashback arrestors and non-return valves
- blowpipes, mixers and cutting attachments
- the connections between all of the above
Welding machines add electrical test and tag on top. A machine that is plugged in, switched on and reachable takes minutes. One buried behind a rack, or out on a site vehicle, takes as long as it takes to find.
The six-monthly visit versus the yearly one
The two cadences are different jobs, and the yearly one is longer.
Six-monthly covers the wear items — regulator functional tests and leak testing at working pressure, and hose assemblies checked for cuts and excessive wear. This is the shorter visit.
Yearly adds flashback arrestor testing, as detailed in AS 4603. Arrestors are the item most likely to fail quietly, because a unit can look perfectly sound and no longer do its job. That test is not something you can eyeball, which is why the standard puts a date on it.
Both sit under the broader equipment obligations in AS 4839-2001, and both are the reason gear gets replaced at the five-year ceiling rather than run until it visibly fails.
What makes a visit run long
In practice, four things:
Equipment that is not there. A trolley on a job site is a trolley that does not get tested, and it becomes a second visit or a drop-off. Knowing where everything is before the day is the single biggest saving.
Unknown age. When labels are gone and there is no service history, working out whether an item is inside the five-year window turns into detective work. Sometimes the answer is that it cannot be established, and the item comes out of service.
Gear that fails mid-inspection. A regulator that will not hold pressure changes the visit from testing to triage — is it the regulator, a connection, or something further along the assembly. That is time well spent, but it is time.
Nobody who can make a decision. When something fails, someone has to say whether it gets repaired, replaced, or withdrawn. If that person is not reachable, the gear sits in limbo and the paperwork stays open.
What you get at the end
The output is evidence, not just a pass. Tags on the equipment, and a record of what was tested, when, and what the result was — which is what an auditor, an insurer or a head contractor is actually asking for when they ask whether your gas equipment is compliant.
That matters more than it sounds. Plenty of workshops have gear that would pass, and no way to prove it did.
If a visit will not fit
Two options when a full on-site visit is awkward. Equipment can be dropped at the Laverton North branch, which suits a shop that can spare a cart for a day. Or a visit gets split — the fixed gear on site, the portable gear brought in.
On-site service runs across Victoria, Melbourne through to greater VIC. What is worth avoiding is the third option workshops drift into by default, which is letting the date slide until something fails or somebody asks.
The short version
Half a day for a typical workshop. Longer if the gear is scattered, older than its paperwork, or fails on the day. Shorter if everything is in one place with its history attached — which is mostly a matter of the fifteen minutes you spend before the van arrives.
