Socket sets package the drive ranges into ready kits: mirror polish sets in 1/4 inch drive, Lok-On sets with twist-lock rails, impact and deep impact sets up to 3/4 inch drive, E-Torx sets, extension bar sets and metric/imperial combination kits. Mechanics, fitters and apprentices building a first kit are the usual buyers, along with workshops replacing sets that have drifted apart over the years.

Which drive size set comes first?

A 1/2 inch drive set does the widest work in automotive and general fitting; add 1/4 inch for small fasteners and tight access, and step up to 3/4 inch when plant and truck work enters the picture.
