Why do I need flux when brazing or silver soldering?

Flux dissolves surface oxides and shields the joint from air as it heats, letting the molten alloy wet the metal and draw into the joint by capillary action. Without it, filler balls up and sits on the surface. Match the flux to the alloy's working temperature, apply it to cleaned metal, and wash residue off afterwards — most brazing fluxes are corrosive if left in place.
