Aluminium MIG wire in the two workhorse alloys — 4043 and 5356 — plus 5183 for high-strength marine joints and AL1100 for pure aluminium. Precision layer wound spools from WIA Austmig, Talweld SAFRA, UNIMIG Hypermig and CIGWELD Autocraft run from 0.45kg mini spools for spool guns up to 6kg and 7kg spools for push-pull systems.
Should I use 4043 or 5356 aluminium MIG wire?
4043 (silicon-alloyed) flows well, resists hot cracking on 6xxx extrusions and castings, and lays a smoother bead. 5356 (magnesium-alloyed) is stronger, matches 5xxx marine plate, and is the better choice where the job will be anodised — 4043 turns dark grey. When in doubt on structural or 5xxx work, run 5356.
