Why use gas-shielded flux-cored wire instead of solid MIG wire?

The flux generates a slag that supports the weld pool, so vertical-up welding runs at far higher current and deposition than solid wire can manage. It is also more forgiving of primed or scaled plate, and the fast-freezing slag leaves clean, well-profiled fillets on structural work. The trade-off is slag removal between passes.
