Ceriated tungsten electrodes — 2% cerium oxide, grey tip — from UNIMIG and North Welding Products in 1.6mm to 4.8mm diameters. Cerium's easy arc ignition at low amperage makes these the tungsten of choice for thin material, precision work and DC pipe root runs.
What is a ceriated tungsten best for?
Low-current DC work: it strikes reliably at amperages where other tungstens stutter, holds a stable arc on thin stainless and sheet steel, and needs none of the run-in that pure tungsten does. It also performs acceptably on AC at lower currents, though heavy AC aluminium work is better served by a zirconated or lanthanated electrode.
