What does iron powder in an electrode coating do?

The powder melts into the weld pool, so each rod deposits more metal per amp — recovery rates run well above 100 per cent compared with a standard coating. The arc is soft and forgiving with easy slag release, making these electrodes fast and economical on flat and horizontal fillets, though the fluid pool rules out vertical and overhead positions.
