Air nibblers and shears cut sheet metal cleanly without the heat, sparks or edge distortion of a cut-off wheel. Nibblers punch a narrow kerf that steers through curves and internal cut-outs; shears slice long straight runs in steel and aluminium sheet, leaving edges ready for folding or welding.
Nibbler or shear — which cuts sheet metal better?
Shears are faster and cleaner on straight lines and gentle curves, and waste no material to a kerf. Nibblers win on tight radii, internal openings and profiled sheet such as corrugated roofing, at the cost of a trail of half-moon offcuts. Many shops keep one of each.
