When do I step up from HSS to cobalt endmills?
Move to HSS-Co8 when cutting stainless, high-tensile or heat-resistant steels — the cobalt content keeps the edge hard as cutting temperatures climb, giving noticeably longer life than plain HSS at the same speeds. For abrasive or hardened material, carbide is the next step.
