Where do I start when choosing a drill bit for metal?

• General steel: HSS jobber drills handle most mild steel work.
• Stainless and harder alloys: step up to cobalt-series bits, which resist heat at the cutting edge.
• Large holes in plate: an annular cutter on a mag base drill cuts faster and cleaner than a twist drill.
• Concrete and masonry: use SDS Plus or SDS Max bits in a rotary hammer, never a standard twist drill.
