What's the right tapping drill size?

Subtract the thread pitch from the nominal diameter for standard metric threads — M8 x 1.25 taps into a 6.8mm hole, M10 x 1.5 into 8.5mm. Undersize the hole and the tap binds or snaps; oversize and the thread strips under load.
